When making a website or forum, you also need a place to test things. If you use a free provider of forums (like proboards), you'll have to sign up again to get a test board. When making a website using notepad or an editor of any kind, it is just a new file you make.
On this test board, you'll test out codes you get from others or that you make yourself. You enter the code and see what happens. Since it is just a test board, you don't have to be scared that something goes wrong.
Most codes require you to edit it as you see fit. You can also do that on your test board and see what your editing has for effect.
Also you use this board to view your skin. Making a skin in your head may look good, but on the outside it looks really bad. When you've put the skin on your test board, you can see what is wrong with it and improve it.
A test board is for you and those who help you with building your site, not for public uses. The only things a test board needs are two categories, each with two boards. Two normal threads, two sticky threads and two announcement threads. You'll also need a thread with more than two posts. This should give you everything you'll need to check things out.
Remember that you can always make a new board if you're going to test a special code. And you can always open up a new test board if you want to.
